Carbon Forestry 2023: Shaping New Zealand's Carbon Markets

As anticipated, the fifth Carbon Forestry event in Rotorua late August drew over 300 attendees over two eventful days, with additional remote participation from local and international delegates, highlighting its global significance.

This diverse gathering included forest managers, investors, land managers, foresters, legal and financial professionals, policymakers, and more, fostering dynamic discussions and innovation.

In a rapidly changing policy landscape and with uncertainty surrounding the future of New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme, Carbon Forestry 2023 speakers provided vital insights into the industry's current state, both locally and internationally.

The event featured lively panel discussions that encouraged interactive Q&A sessions, enriching the knowledge-sharing experience.

At Carbon Forestry 2023, the WIDE Trust sponsored five young people from various companies, spanning diverse roles and geographic locations. Aged between 23 and 31, these young people had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in industry insights and network with leaders in this field. Sponsored attendees were Simon Smith – Carbon Broker, Logan Robertson – Carbon and Property Manager, Hannah Munro – Discover Forestry, Steven Bell – Graduate Forester and Daniel Robertson – Forest Manager.

Carbon Forestry 2023 is not just an event but a catalyst for positive change in New Zealand's carbon markets. It aligns perfectly with our mission to support forestry education and development, promoting knowledge-sharing, innovation, and collaboration.

We commend the organisers and participants for shaping the future of carbon markets in New Zealand and anticipate continued support for events driving positive change in the forestry and wood industry. Together, we are building a brighter future for forestry and wood-related education and development in New Zealand.
